Launches Electrical, Contractors Regulations
Monrovia, Liberia – The digital site for Electrical Professional and Contractors Regulation certification and licensing has been created by the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC). The goal of the digital portal’s introduction is to improve knowledge of the Service Providers and Interview Panel.
The opening of the digital portal is not only a technological milestone but also a strategic move toward safety and professionalism in the industry, according to LERC Chairman Claude J. Katta, who spoke during the unveiling on Friday, May 30, 2025 in Monrovia.
The Certification and Licensing of Electrical experts and Contractors Regulations, which were issued by the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission in 2023, he said, clearly defined the qualifications required of experts and contractors doing electrical work.
Chairman Katta explained that the rules are applicable to those who work on electrical systems, including those who design, install, commission, maintain, repair, inspect, test, and contract for energy efficiency.
“Under these regulations, LERC has established three license types and two certifications: the Energy Auditors’ License, the Solar PV Installers’ License, the Electrical Professionals’ Certification, and the Electrical Inspectors’ Certification,” he said.
Additionally, the LERC Chairman clarified that a Licensed Electrical Worker is required to do or oversee electrical work in all countries, whether it be residential or commercial.
He claims that it encompasses, among other things, electrical wire installation, repair, or alteration; power point addition, extension, or replacement (e.g., outlets, switches, lighting); Fixing or swapping out circuit breakers or consumer control devices.
According to him, the complexity and size of the electrical installation determine the type of Licensed Electrical Worker needed. “While home installations may only need the services of an electrician or inspector, larger systems, such as those managed by service providers, require skilled electrical technicians or engineers,” Katta added.
The Chairman strongly advised consumers to engage only licensed individuals for electrical work; adding that once the examination and licensing processes are fully rolled out, a directory of licensed professionals will be accessible on the LERC website and portal.
Licensed professionals are authorized to operate based on load capacities and voltage levels as stipulated in the regulations. Most importantly, always verify the validity of a professional’s license before allowing any electrical work to begin. This can be done by checking the individual’s Licensed Electrical Worker ID card, which will be issued by the Commission, he added.
Therefore, Katta called on all electrical professionals and contractors across Liberia to visit the newly launched portal and begin the registration process to obtain their certification and license.
Also speaking, DonBoSco Electricity trainer, James Sengbe called on the LERC to use the regulatory license power to empower and help build professional competence quality and ensure safety amount others.
For his part, LOIC Program Director, Ben Q. Frederick said the the institution will give its support to ensure that the certification and licensing of Electrical Professional and Contractors Regulation digital portal becomes a success.
