Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender equality and expanding opportunities for women and girls in football as it joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day with a special program held at the Blue Field in Monrovia.

Jodie Reid-Seton, Head of Women’s Football and LFA Third Vice President, gave the introductory remarks, describing the event as a significant occasion to honor women’s accomplishments while reiterating the demand for equal chances in sports and all facets of society.
“International Women’s Day reminds us that women have long contributed to the growth and development of communities, nations, and industries,” Madam Reid-Seton said. “While progress has been made, we must continue to break down barriers and create spaces where women and girls can thrive.”
Madam Reid-Seton emphasised the expanding global influence of women’s football, pointing out that big events like the FIFA Women’s World Cup have inspired millions of young girls worldwide while showcasing the extraordinary talent, tenacity, and enthusiasm of female athletes.

She emphasized that women’s football represents more than just sport, describing it as a powerful tool for social change. She affirms that young females who play football gain self-discipline, confidence, teamwork and leadership qualities that go beyond the pitch.
The efforts of international football organisations, including FIFA and the Confederation of African Football, to create chances for women’s football through more funding, tournaments, and development initiatives throughout Africa were also recognised by Madam Reid-Seton.
She pointed out that despite these developments, issues including unequal compensation, scarce resources, and diminished media attention still hinder women in sports. In order to guarantee justice and equal opportunity for female athletes, she urged persistent lobbying and cooperation.

“When we invest in women’s sports, we invest in stronger communities,” Madam Reid-Seton stated. “Supporting women’s football in Liberia will inspire young girls, promote healthy lifestyles, and create new opportunities for leadership and success.”
The event brought together key stakeholders from the sports and gender sectors. Remarks were delivered by the Deputy Country Director of UN Women Liberia Madam Yemi Falayajo, Vice President for Women’s Affairs of the Liberia National Olympic Committee Sheba Brown, a member of FIFA Women’s Football Committee Roseline Konneh, and Liberia’s Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection Atty. Laura Kolakeh, among others.

The event concluded with a series of women’s football games at the Blue Field, showcasing the talent of female players and reiterating the LFA’s commitment to promoting the game in Liberia.
During the celebrations, the LFA reaffirmed its dedication to working with both local and international partners to improve women’s football and ensure that Liberian girls and women have the opportunity to participate, compete, and lead the sport.
