Monrovia, Liberia – The Republic of Liberia and the Republic of Angola have reiterated their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, which is a significant diplomatic milestone. Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Liberia, met with her Angolan counterpart, Foreign Minister Téte António, on the margins of the African Union (AU) Summit.

They discussed issues on strengthening collaboration in important fields including mining, agriculture, oil and gas development, and marine issues. Furthermore, as a first step, both parties decided to draft and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations and visa-free entry for privileged passport holders. They agreed to set up a Joint Commission, which will take place in Luanda, Angola, on May 4–5, 2025.

Foreign Minister António said that he reached out to his Liberian colleague at the request of Angolan President João Lourenço, who asked for an update on bilateral relations after taking over as AU Chairman. President Lourenço gave his foreign minister instructions to make sure that relations with Liberia be reinforced, building on earlier interactions meant to promote bilateral cooperationion.

The framework for oil and gas has previously been considered and ought to serve as the foundation for the Memorandum of Understanding in that area, both foreign ministers agreed. Additional technical-level conversations will be needed for other areas.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai congratulated President Lourenço on his new position as AU Chairperson, according to Foreign Minister Nyanti. She underlined Liberia’s desire to further cooperation with Angola, especially in fields that have potential for both countries’ economic development.

The ministers agreed to look into cooperative projects to improve maritime security, fight piracy, and support the sustainable development of marine resources and the blue economy, acknowledging the strategic significance of the Atlantic coastline for both countries.

Liberia has indicated a great desire to take use of Angola’s wealth of experience in the oil and gas industry. Both countries desire to create a combined task force devoted to hydrocarbon exploration and production in order to promote technological exchanges and investment prospects.

Liberia and Angola recognized the unrealized potential for cooperation in the mining industry. They pledged to exchange best practices, draw in foreign direct investment, and make sure that mineral resources were extracted in an ethical and sustainable manner.

Another main topic of discussion was agriculture, which is a vital component of both economies. In order to increase food security and create jobs, the foreign ministers looked at programs that would increase agricultural production through technology transfer, capacity building, and agribusiness enterprises.

The shared dedication to expanding upon this base has been reinforced by these high-level talks. Liberia and Angola are in a strong position to achieve significant economic growth and support regional stability by promoting cooperation in key areas and putting laws that encourage trade and investment into place.
