Monrovia, Liberia -Chinese Ambassador to Liberia YIN Chengwu has emphasized the major advancements and accomplishments since the start of diplomatic relations in 1977 at a reception honoring the long-standing friendship between China and Liberia, along with a renewed commitment to future cooperation.
The occasion, with the theme “Keeping in Mind the Original Aspiration of China-Liberia Relations to Move Forward Together,” emphasized the two countries’ ongoing friendship and cooperative endeavors.
China-Liberia ties have developed on the foundation of the one-China principle since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2003. The bond has remained strong despite the difficulties encountered on the journey. The Chinese ambassador expressed appreciation to everyone who has helped the bilateral relations flourish.
Thoughts of the many high-level meetings over the years were shared by Ambassador YIN, who cited a particularly memorable visit in 2009. An important turning point was reached when former Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping asked former Vice President of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai, to visit China. It represented the enduring relationship because it was one of President Xi’s first meetings with an African leader.
Ambassador YIN stated that China has been a steadfast supporter of peace in Liberia. Over 10,000 officers and troops from 19 different Chinese peacekeeping units were dispatched between 2003 and 2017, making a substantial contribution to UNMIL and the stability of Liberia.
China has carried out multiple programs including technological assistance in the field of agriculture. Ambassador YIN emphasized that the Agricultural Technology Demonstration Centre in Bong County successfully produced hybrid rice seeds, promoting food security and ending Liberia’s dependence on imports. The center also taught 2,500 local trainees.
According to Ambassador YIN, Liberia infrastructure has greatly benefited from China’s investment. A number of iconic buildings constructed with Chinese assistance, promoting economic and social development, are the Ministry of Health Office Building, the University of Liberia Fendall Campus, and the Roberts International Airport Terminal.
According to Ambassador YIN, China has deployed 16 medical teams to Liberia since 1984, offering crucial training and healthcare services. Which have improved this relationship in the last few years by implementing new procedures and making considerable contributions to the JFK Hospital.
China was quick to offer emergency aid during the COVID-19 and Ebola crises. According to Ambassador YIN, “We demonstrated our commitment to Liberia’s health and safety by building treatment centers, sending medical teams, and donating essential supplies.”
China has been a vocal supporter of Liberia’s educational advancement. Ambassador YIN said, since 1986, China have provided about 1,000 scholarships to Liberian students, promoting academic growth and cross-cultural exchange.
Ambassador YIN also considered the tenets that guide relations between China and Liberia. “We honor and assist one another in defending fundamental interests. Our strong diplomatic connections are demonstrated by Liberia’s adherence to the one-China principle and our mutual support in international forums.”
China has emerged as Liberia’s top trading partner; in 2023, bilateral trade was valued at US$320 million, with US$13 million in Chinese investments. The mutually beneficial economic cooperation is still thriving.
With an optimistic outlook, the Chinese Ambassador spoke of Presidents Xi Jinping and Boakai’s leadership for the future. According to him, the relationship is going through a transition. China hopes to increase participation, encourage practical cooperation, and work with others to address global concerns. The People Republic of China has again pledged to improve on infrastructure development including; two over pass, continue rebranding of State Broadcast, LBS and others.
In response to Ambassador Yin’s statement, Cllr. Deweh E. Gray, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude and excitement about the desire and interest in enhancing China-Liberia relations through development.
The Chinese Ambassador was reassured by Cllr. Gray of Liberia’s unwavering commitment to the One China Policy, which aims to uphold sovereignty and refrain from interfering.
Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, also used the occasion to reiterate Liberia’s commitment to upholding the One-China policy and express gratitude to China for its continued support of the Liberia’s development.
Liberia’s foreign policy is primarily planned by the chief executive, as Speaker Koffa acknowledged, but he also reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to upholding the One-China principle and strengthening diplomatic connections with China.
Speaker Koffa also urged China to provide technology assistance to Liberia in order to strengthen the country’s agricultural industry. He further that, Liberia is rapidly running out of its supply of stable food, rice, which it imports to the people of Liberia.
