Monrovia, Liberia – In response to the escalating political crisis in Venezuela, Liberia has join other nations to raised severe alert at the UN, stating that the current circumstances in Venezuela pose grave threats to regional and global peace and security.
Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amb. Lewis Brown, made a joint statement on behalf of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, and Liberia on Monday, January 5, 2026, during a high-level Security Council peace meeting in New York, USA. He expressed “deep concern” over reports of the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as incidents involving important state institutions.
The Liberian envoy brought the A3 into line with the African Union and ECOWAS recent statement on Venezuela, emphasizing that the situation poses a threat to both the regional peace and security as well as Venezuela’s domestic stability. He noted that the A3 is unwavering in its adherence to the fundamental principles of international law, such as respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty as guaranteed by the UN Charter, highlighting resistance to acts that can escalate tensions or jeopardize constitutional order.
Additionally, Amb. Brown stated that the A3 urged everyone to exercise moderation and stressed that any long-term solution to the crisis must be inclusive, peaceful, and owned by the Venezuelan people themselves. It must also be supported rather than imposed by the international community. The African Union’s commitment to peace, stability, and international respect was reaffirmed by the Liberian envoy, Liberia, and its E3 partners. They also pledged to support Security Council and regional efforts aimed at reaching a long-term solution.
The statements were made during a Security Council meeting that was called under Somalia’s leadership and included briefings from members of civil society and the United Nations as attention to the developing situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela grows on a worldwide scale.
