    Liberia, China Reaffirm Strong Bilateral Ties.

    Monrovia, Liberia – A high-level bilateral meeting has taken place between His Excellency Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), and Hon. Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr., the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia.

    Aiming to further strategic collaboration between the two countries, the conference was held in Changsha City on the sidelines of the Fourth China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo.

    Deputy Chief of Staff to the Vice President Macdonald Metzger, Hon. Magdalene Dagoseh, Minister of Commerce and Industry; Hon. Ibrahim Nyei, Deputy Minister for International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Hon. Mckinley Thomas, Liberia’s Ambassador to China; and J. Wesley Washington, Minister Counselor at the Liberian Embassy in Beijing, were among the senior members of the Liberian delegation that accompanied Vice President Koung.

    Minister Wang Yi congratulated Liberia on its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term and conveyed heartfelt congratulations from President Xi Jinping to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

    He reiterated China’s readiness to strengthen cooperation with international organizations, including the UN. Wang Yi stated that China is committed to enhancing collaboration with Liberia in several important areas, such as trade and investment facilitation, energy and mining, and infrastructure development.

    He also praised Liberia’s position on non-interference and the defense of national sovereignty in international discussions, and he reaffirmed China’s gratitude for Liberia’s continuous support of the One China Policy.

    Vice President Koung thanked the Chinese government for its unwavering support to Liberia. He reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the One China Policy and commended China’s assistance in a number of national development projects, such as the ongoing overhead bridge near the Ministerial Complex, the expansion of Roberts International Airport, the construction of the Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, the 75 megawatt green energy project in Bomi County, and the development of the Robertsfield Highway.

    He listed the following as Liberia’s top priorities for further collaboration: Enhanced access to Chinese markets for Liberian exports, Infrastructure expansion for renewable energy, Purchasing Bailey bridges and road building tools, enhancing collaboration in fisheries and marine safety, Knowledge transmission, medical and agricultural equipment provision, and vocational training and scholarships for young Liberians.

    Minister Wang Yi responded by restating China’s dedication to advancing Liberia’s development objectives, highlighting technological collaboration, shared industrialization, and mutual confidence.

    He emphasized China’s goal to create an atmosphere that is conducive to Liberian goods and services and to make it easier for Liberia to interact with Chinese businesses, such as those that produce heavy machinery and infrastructure technologies.

    Both sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening strategic collaboration under Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for inclusive development and expressed satisfaction with the direction of their bilateral relations.

    The following actions were agreed upon: arrange for Liberia to visit Chinese industrial zones to see the equipment used in the building of roads and bridges, Frameworks for educational partnerships and scholarship advancement, Enhance collaboration among pertinent ministries and agencies. Examine bilateral trade agreements under the preferential tariffs offered by China. Observe how agreements in the energy and infrastructure sectors are being implemented.
