Paynesville, Montserrado County – In an effort to highlight up-and-coming female football talent in West Africa, Liberia is hosting the first WAFU Zone A U-17 Girls Tournament.
With Sierra Leone playing Senegal at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the first competition officially began at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
Of the nine nations that constitute WAFU Zone A, only three are officially participating in the tournament. The three nations are; Senegal, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
In a playoff structure, the teams will play against one another twice, with the team that finishes first in the ranking table crowned the winner.
Sekou Manubah, the head coach of Liberia, announced a 20-man team that arrived on camp early Monday.
In order to perform well at home, the young Lone Star girls have been putting a lot of effort into their preparation, emphasizing high-intensity training, rapid ball movement, finishing exercises, and tactical organization.
With Liberia hoping to take advantage of their home soil and win the first title, the event promises to be an entertaining showcase of the greatest young female talent in the region.
