Monrovia, Liberia – To address the issues afflicting the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia, the Liberia Labor Congress has appealed for unity among its members. Only unity, according to LLC Secretary General John Nyemah Nat, can boost their attempts to stop the mistreatment they are subjected to at the hands of certain employers.
Mr. Nat made the appeal when he delivered the keynote speech at the opening of a two-day training organized by the Domestic Worker Union of Liberia with funding from the Domestic Workers Federation International in Paynesville during the weekend.
The LLC Secretary General cautioned domestic workers to abreast with the protocol and provisions outlined in the International Labor Organization convention number 189.
He claimed that despite efforts to resolve the issue, the LLC is still receiving complaints about poor labor practices among domestic workers.
The National Legislature must domesticate International Labor Organization convention number 189, according to Martha Cole, President of the Domestic Workers Union of Liberia.
As long as Liberia signed the international agreement, the law cannot be enforced, in her opinion, because the national legislature has not domesticated it.
Mrs. Cole admonished the trainees to show respect for their supervisors and never to minimize or look down on themselves.
The domestic workers were also counseled by the president of the Liberian Domestic Workers Union not to expose themselves to sexual advances.
All member nations are required to domesticate and ratify Convention 189 in order for employers to uphold the rights of domestic workers. This convention was adopted in 2011 during the meeting of the International Labor Organization.
