Monrovia, Liberia – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), the ministry in charge of ECOWAS Affairs, alongside the ECOWAS Commission, is expected to break grounds for the construction of a Joint Border Post (JBP) between Liberia and Sierra Leone.
In order to start construction on the Jendema–Bo Waterside Joint Border Post, the MFDP and the ECOWAS National Office will formally transfer a specific piece of land to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
The project intends to enhance cross-border mobility, fortify security cooperation, and increase trade between the two Mano River Union countries. It is regarded as a significant step toward strengthening regional integration.
Her Excellency Damtien Tchintchibidja, Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, will represent the President of the Commission at the ceremony. She will be accompanied by the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, the Director of Transport, and other officials of the Commission.
Along with members of the Bilateral Joint Border Post Committee, the Liberian delegation will consist of important cabinet members and heads of agencies, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Finance and Development Planning Augustine Kpehe Nganfuan, Minister of Public Works Roland Layfette Giddings, Minister of Internal Affairs Francis Nyumalin, Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah of the Liberia Revenue Authority, and Chairman of the Land Authority Samule F. Kpakio.
The Jendema-Bo project, which represents the bloc’s goal of a borderless and economically thriving West Africa, has been chosen as a prominent effort for the upcoming 50th Anniversary Celebrations of ECOWAS, highlighting the organization’s drive toward deeper regional collaboration.
The program will go from planning to full implementation with the groundbreaking, which will signify the official transfer of the site to the chosen contractors and overseeing consultants. The Joint Border Post, which will highlight the long-standing collaboration between ECOWAS, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, is anticipated to greatly improve trade and mobility inside the Mano River Union region once it is finished.
ECOWAS, a regional political and economic union comprising twelve West African states, was founded in 1975 with the goal of fostering economic integration and bolstering members’ collective self-sufficiency.
