Liberia, UN Celebrate 80th Anniversary

Kakata, Margibi County – At an exciting event conducted in Kakata, Margibi County, on Friday, the Liberian government and the United Nations celebrated eight decades of collaboration and achievement. Government officials, UN representatives, civil society actors, and students were all present at the event, which emphasized Liberia’s longstanding status as a founding member of the UN and its ongoing cooperation with the international organization in promoting human rights, peace, and prosperity.

President Joseph N. Boakai, who spoke at the ceremony with the theme “80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,” stated that Liberia has always been governed by the principles of the UN, peace, security, and human rights and continues to be an active participant in international cooperation initiatives.

“It is a moment of pride for our country today as we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations. As a founding member of this truly global organization, we recall that our decision in 1945 to sign the Charter in San Francisco was made with a deep sense of duty to humanity and to our common world. We therefore celebrate with joy the UN’s global accomplishments as we reflect on Liberia’s proud history as a founding member of this respected organization,” Boakai added.

According to him, the United Nations stands as a beacon of hope and cooperation for all peoples and nations, working tirelessly to uphold the values of peace, security, development, and human rights. “We reaffirm Liberia’s continued support for the UN’s mission and underscore our belief and leadership in advancing global peace and solidarity,” he said.

The Liberian leader acknowledged the value of teamwork in tackling the world’s most urgent issues, ranging from humanitarian crises and conflict resolution to sustainable development and climate change, as he looked ahead to his country’s 2026 term on the UN Security Council. Furthermore, he explained that Liberia is unwavering in its support of multilateralism and will keep helping the UN accomplish these objectives.

The UN-Liberia collaboration is “a model of resilience, mutual respect, and shared progress,” according to Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberia’s minister of foreign affairs. She said the UN has been very helpful to Liberia in areas like healthcare, education, government reform, and peacebuilding.

The UN is more than just an organization, according to Christine Umutoni, the UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, who describes it as a living promise that inspires generations and crosses boundaries and continents. The United Nations has been working to promote human rights, combat poverty and hunger, create peace, and create a more sustainable world for eight decades, Madam Umutoni added.

“We face enormous challenges as we look to the future, including growing conflicts, climate chaos, rogue technologies, and threats to the foundation of our institution,” she continued.

There is no time for laziness or withdrawal, according to the UN chief in Liberia, who also said that the world needs to recommit to tackling issues that no country can handle on its own. “Let’s unite on this UN Day and fulfill the remarkable promise of the United Nations. Let’s demonstrate to the world what is possible when “we the peoples” decide to act as one,” Madam Umutoni stated.
