Liberia Women Empowerment Project Begins Mid-term Review

Monrovia, Liberia – The Mid-Term Review (MTR) of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP) has been formally launched by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MGCSP), with financial assistance from the World Bank. According to a release, the review runs from October 20 to 30, 2025, and is being held at the World Bank Office in Monrovia with field visits across project counties.

Additionally, the review will evaluate the progress, accomplishments, and lessons learned under each of the project’s five components: fostering positive social norms and preventing gender-based violence; bolstering citizen participation and community engagement; increasing access to health and education services for women and girls, encouraging resilient livelihoods and women’s economic empowerment; and improving institutional capacity, accountability, and knowledge management to ensure inclusive and sustainable development throughout Liberia.

The World Bank Team, Plan International Liberia as Lead Service Provider, the MGCSP Project Implementation Unit, and consortium partners ActionAid Liberia, CRS, Medica Liberia, Defense for Children Initiatives (DCI), Foundation for Community Initiatives (FCI), Kids Education Engagement Project (KEEP) Liberia, and VIAMO are among the participants.

In order to enhance delivery and effect for the remaining project duration, the MTR will share experiences, pinpoint lessons learned, and suggest modifications. Discussions will culminate in a wrap-up meeting between the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the World Bank Team, and implementing partners to agree on key actions moving forward.

The Liberia Women Empowerment Project, funded by the World Bank through a US$44.6 million grant, is being implemented in six counties; Montserrado, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, Grand Gedeh, and River Cess.  However, the project seeks to empower women and girls through improved access to education, health, livelihood opportunities, and inclusive participation in decision-making processes.

The Ministry is still dedicated to fostering a collaborative atmosphere and making sure Liberia fulfills its national and international obligations to women’s rights and gender equality, the institution noted.
