Liberia YMCA National Youth Council launch 50,000 Plastic Bottles Collection Project in Monrovia

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia YMCA National Youth Council has started a project to collect 50,000 plastic bottles. The Project is anticipated to be completed in four phases and is to cost US $18, 905.

The effort, according to Ebenezer Davies, the head of the Council, attempts to address Liberia’s plastic pollution problem. Davies said, the bottles gathered will be converted into Eco-Bricks and then utilized for construction at their camp site in the Todee District, Montserrado County.

While highlighting the need for immediate action, project officer for the Department of Multilateral Environmental Agreements at the Environmental Protection Agency Arthur Becker claimed that plastic contamination poses a serious threat to the nation’s fisheries and agricultural industries.

Becker, however, assured Libria government commitment to help the 50,000 Plastic Bottles Collection activities. Plastic waste is a substantial cause of pollution, obstructing drainage systems that help avoid flooding and polluting the streets.

Every day, it is reported that Liberia generates 0.6 kilogram of municipal solid garbage per person, of which 14% is single use of plastic.
