Monrovia, Liberia – Darwin Nunez is unlikely to be sold by Liverpool to AC Milan this month unless a replacement is signed. In his third season with the Reds, Nunez, 25, has once again struggled, managing only four goals in all competitions.
In 2022, the Uruguayan joined from Benfica for an initial cost of £64 million, which may increase to a club-record £85 million. Despite his well-documented problems under Jurgen Klopp, Arne Slot’s arrival hasn’t sparked his Anfield career. As a result, Nunez is predicted to leave during the January transfer window, with AC Milan being the most strongly linked team.
After a four-game losing streak, Milan fired manager Paulo Fonseca, who was just hired in June, and are now seventh in Serie A. However, the Mail claimed that Liverpool has not heard from the Italian powerhouses over a possible deal for Nunez.
This week, it was claimed in Italy that Milan was getting ready to make an offer for the 25-year-old, who has fallen behind Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz in Slot’s hierarchy. The plan called for a six-month first loan with a summer purchase commitment of £41.5 million.
With former Porto manager Sergio Conceicao receiving the keys to San Siro, Milan’s recent management change may have altered their intentions. Nunez would join several other attackers hoping to revive their careers at Milan if they were to make a transfer.
English striker Tammy Abraham, who was loaned from Roma, and Alvaro Morata both joined the Rossoneri. Luka Jovic plays for Milan and signed a £49.7 million contract with Real Madrid in 2019. Both their main player, Rafael Leao, and former England international Ruben Loftus-Cheek are presently out due to injuries.
Liverpool is rumored to want a successor set up before releasing Nunez, even if Milan were to make a substantial deal. Slot rationalized Nunez’s goalless season earlier this month, implying that he still believes in his No. 9.
“For me, he has impact, if you only look at goals, he hasn’t scored as many as he would like to, or we would like a number nine to score, but his work ethic is a factor. He plays for a squad that wins a lot of games and scores a lot of goals. As a number nine, you naturally want to score more goals, and he certainly wants that too. However, I’m evaluating Darwin and Mohamed Salah not just on their goals but also on their work ethic and contributions to the squad. Perhaps he wants it too much because of how much the supporters support him,” Slot said.
