Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia National Bar Association (LBR ) in collaboration with the National Election Commission ( NEC ) on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 embark on a Nationwide Public Dialogue in Monrovia. The goal of the all-day event was to raise knowledge of electoral dispute resolution (EDR) with members of the bar, CSO security personnel and the media.
Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, National Secretary General of the LNBA and the project supervisor, gave an overview of the agenda, stating that the event’s goals were to engage in a series of discussions about capacity building, legal advocacy, effective information dissemination about the electoral Law, and investigating electoral disputes at the level of the National Elections Commission (NEC).
The process, he continued, is the outcome of a memorandum of understanding that was signed by all parties concerned and calls for cooperation with supporting laws to ensure the effective conduct of the presidential and legislative elections in 2023 while also taking the rule of Law into consideration.
Cllr. Varmah at the same time pleaded with his colleagues to remain united and work in peace on key activities on the election time table. He stated that the LNBA will continue to organise engagement meetings with pertinent international partners in order to obtain their assistance and cooperation in addressing electoral violence. Additionally, he noted that the LNBA would organise engagement meetings with civil society organisations, religious groups, including both Christians and Muslims, as well as the Join security, in order to address issues relating to electoral violence in the nation.
The programme, which will be carried out across the nation by the LNBA and partners, is a short- and long-term one, and Cllr. Varmah mentioned this in his remarks. He is grateful for the cooperation.
For her part, HER HONOR Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia caution Lawyers to be current with the new election law noting that the sustainability of the peace remain paramount to the development of the country.
Justice Yuoh added that there are Layers who do not have merit in a particular case and they are giving people hope something she described as unfortunate. She added that Lawyers should remember to obtain full knowledge from his or her client regarding a particular case before proceeding to the supreme court.
The Chief Justice said it is intended to maintain the integrity of the supreme court of Liberia.
