Capitol Hill, Monrovia – Prior to the elections on October 10, the Liberia National Police has started a dialogue series with media professionals in Monrovia. The Dialogue Series aims to improve communication between election-related state security actors and the media.
Melvin Sakor, the deputy police inspector general, made a brief remark about the media’s roles in these elections during the round table discussion on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. Sakor pointed out that it’s crucial for the police to work with media organizations to ensure that the public receives the right information.
The only way, according to him, for that to happen is to improve ties with the pertinent organizations that are in charge of informing the public. He noted that Liberia is at a pivotal point in our political landscape and that, in order to achieve this, it is crucial for the media and joint security to collaborate.
Daniel Nyankonah, the acting president of the Press Union of Liberia, boasted of the long-standing bond between the media and the government’s security forces. Nyankonah noted that the PUL can boast of zero attacks on the security by the media, and added the Union and its’ members remain committed to collaborating with the security sector.
