To Boost Efficiency In Tax Administration

Monrovia, Liberia – The second Tax Administration Diagnostic Assessment Tool (TADAT) course is presently being attended by employees of the Liberia Revenue Authority’s (LRA) Domestic Tax Department as well as staff members from other supporting departments. The goal of this project is to evaluate and enhance the LRA’s tax administration structure with an emphasis on improving the tax system’s effectiveness, openness, and equity.

TADAT is a widely used instrument for assessing the effectiveness of tax administration that was created by international partners with input from top experts. It offers an impartial, systematic, fact-based, and quality-assured evaluation of a nation’s tax structure, pointing out its advantages and pointing out any potential drawbacks.

Building a common knowledge of the state of tax administration in Liberia amongst important stakeholders, including government officials, foreign organizations, and technical aid providers, is the goal of the continuing TADAT program. In order to facilitate quicker and more efficient implementation, it also aims to improve the administration and coordination of outside assistance for changes. The program’s knowledgeable instructors are from Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

LRA Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah encouraged attendees to participate completely in the TADAT training during the inaugural ceremony held in Monrovia on Monday. He underlined that the training will provide them with the know-how to enhance tax administration, plug important loopholes, and cut down on revenue leaks. Additionally, CG Jallah thanked the TADAT Secretariat for their ongoing support and technical help to the LRA.

Jimmy Wati, the primary trainer and spokesperson for the TADAT Secretariat, praised CG Jallah and the participants for their zeal. Value Added Tax (VAT), Corporate Income Tax (CIT), Personal Income Tax (PIT), and excise charges are among the main national taxes whose performance is assessed by the TADAT evaluation, he said. The training is expected to end on November 13, 2024, having started on October 12.

Participants will take an online test given by the TADAT Secretariat in Washington, D.C., after completing the program. Those who pass will receive certification as TADAT assessors. Notably, Liberia conducted its first TADAT evaluation in 2016, which served as a foundation for later changes and strategic planning meant to fortify the nation’s tax administration framework.
