Monrovia, Liberia – The Mano River Youth Parliament Liberia Chapter has applauded the government’s determination to put the General Auditing Commission’s recent audit report recommendations into practice. Speaker of the “MRU” Youth Parliament Daniel Nills claimed that the action will improve the nation’s records for accountability and openness.
The Parliament also urged the Boakai government to go a step further by looking over the records to prove that funds from donor organizations are accounted for in a more open and unbiased manner free from political witch hunts or manipulation.
He added that Liberia is one of the nations whose economies heavily depends on donor funding to propel its development objectives.
According to Nills, partners lament that their aid to Liberia is having little effect because of corruption. He said in order to give hope to Liberia’s citizens and its supporting partners, it is imperative to audit entities in relation to both donor and in-country revenue-generated monies.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, August 1, 2024, in Monrovia, the Youth speaker urged everyone who had been charged with a crime to work with the legal system to establish their innocence because an indictment or set of charges does not imply guilt. He also urged the court system to continue to be extremely fair in the way it performs its duties by administering justice in a reasonable manner.
He implored the opposition community to refrain from making any statements that would be detrimental to preserving national unity or that would compromise the ability of the legal system to effectively prosecute corruption. Highlighting the fact that constructive criticism and responsible political speech are essential democratic values that support the rule of law rather than usurp it out of selfishness.
