Maternal Health Services Show Improvement Across Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia – Measureable advancements in maternal and newborn health services have been reported recently from a number of referral hospitals around Liberia, led by Health Minister Dr. Louise Marpleh Kpoto. Official updates state that since April 2025, there have been no maternal deaths at Rivercess District Hospital. Health authorities credit this accomplishment to more community involvement, better personnel coordination, and tighter oversight.

Dr. Roosevelt Matthews led the F.J. Grante Memorial Hospital in Sinoe County, which recorded zero maternal deaths in January 2026. The hospital attributed the achievement to the nationwide Safe Motherhood campaign, which was backed by the Sinoe County Health Team and the Performance-Based Financing (PBF) Program. Liberia Government Hospital in Bomi Hospital and James N. Davis Jr. Memorial Hospital likewise recorded zero cases.

Maternal mortality in Bong County has significantly decreased in 2025, according to data from C.B. Dunbar Comprehensive Hospital. Enoch Morris, the hospital administrator, told The Liberian Investigator that safer births have been made possible by the introduction of the Drug Revolving Fund, contemporary medical equipment, and increased drug availability, all of which were carried out with Ministry backing.

Morris pointed out that a number of maternal deaths that were reported happened outside of hospitals, frequently as a result of delayed referrals from outlying areas and transportation issues. According to health officials, the sector’s current changes are intended to improve service delivery, accountability, and oversight across the country. They admit that late hospital arrivals, a lack of emergency transport, and obstacles to access in remote areas continue to be associated with maternal health issues in Liberia.

The Ministry has focused strengthening county health teams, improving laboratories and sanitation in referral institutions, guaranteeing a steady supply of drugs during donor transitions, and expanding maternal and newborn services under the direction of Health Minister Dr. Louise Marpleh Kpoto. Despite ongoing difficulties, health officials cite advancements in Rivercess, Sinoe, and Bong Counties as proof of consistent progress in the direction of safer childbirth and better healthcare provision throughout Liberia.
