Millennium Challenge Corporation to reaffirm Liberia eligibility for a new MCC Compact.

Monrovia, Liberia – The Board of Directors of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) will convene early next week to determine whether to confirm Liberia’s eligibility for a new MCC Compact, according to Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Ngafuan.

Minister Ngafuan informed reporters that Alicia Robinson-Morgan, the MCC’s Deputy Vice President for Compact Operations, confirmed an official email that the board meeting is about to take place.

“We have optimism and hope,” Ngafuan stated. “We are confident that this reaffirmation will be successful because each member of the MCC board has a deep affection for Liberia.”

He explained that although discussions are going well, no specific financial amount has been disclosed. This runs counter to previous media reports that stated the Compact will provide $500 million to Liberia.

Ngafuan emphasized, “The MCC has not announced any definitive amount. Those are speculative figures that are being circulated.”

The Finance Minister gave President Joseph Boakai’s recent high-level visits to the US credit for the achievement. He said, negotiations on the MCC Compact progressed significantly as a result of the Liberian leader’s efforts and diplomatic outreach.
