Monrovia, Liberia—Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti continue to lead Liberia in international affairs. The foreign minister’s recent official visit to China from May 18–22, 2026, has been heavily praised by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. At the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Minister Nyanti’s visit was to deepen Liberia-China relationship. During her visit, the two foreign ministers held talks. Chen Xiaodong, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), met with Minister Nyanti. Minister Nyanti delivered a speech at the China Foreign Affairs University, visited Shenzhen, and met with the vice mayor.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, and President Pro-Tempore of the Senate Hon. Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence are among the Liberian leaders who have visited China in succession since 2024, creating a favorable progress for high-level interactions between the two nations. This positive trend has been maintained with strategic cooperation between China and Liberia, strengthened by Foreign Minister Nyanti’s visit to China.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi declared during their discussions that Liberia and China are partners and friends who share good and bad times. The two sides are improving together on the road to modernization and have fought side by side against significant epidemics like COVID-19 and Ebola. Under the executive team of Presidents Xi Jinping and Joseph Nyuma Boakai, bilateral relations have reached a new level of strategic friendship between the two peoples.
It has deepened, and political mutual trust between the two sides has continuously increased in recent years. According to Minister Nyanti, the two heads of state have guided the development of bilateral relations between Liberia and China, which are strategic partners with common values. This year marks China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. Foreign Minister Wang Yi made it clear that China is prepared to collaborate with Liberia to take advantage of the year to further cooperation in sports, youth, culture, and human resource development.
With a view to nurturing young forces for China-Liberia and China-Africa friendship, the Chinese side invited Minister Nyanti to deliver a speech at the China Foreign Affairs University. In her speech, Minister Nyanti introduced Liberia’s foreign policy and engaged in active face-to-face interaction with the students, helping Chinese youth better understand Liberia and China-Liberia friendship.
The results of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the agreement between both presidents have reportedly been actively implemented by both China and Liberia since 2024. The FOCAC’s Ten Partnership Actions pertaining to Liberia have essentially been carried out, and the two nations’ actual cooperation has produced excellent outcomes as reported.
The China-Aid Project for Police Supplies, Emergency Humanitarian Food, and the renovation and expansion of the Liberia Broadcasting System have all been successfully completed. According to reports, the two China-Aid Overpass Bridges Project on Tubman Boulevard, the Government Vehicles and Materials Project, the Agricultural Machinery Modernization Project, the Liberia Bamboo and Rattan Weaving Project, the Fruit and Vegetable Planting and Livestock Raising Technical Assistance Project, and the Chinese Medical Team are all said to be making steady progress.
The two sides discussed and agreed on their stances on important issues of practical cooperation between China and Liberia during her meetings with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. According to Wang Yi, China is prepared to cooperate with Liberia to aggressively promote cooperation in sectors including economy and trade, agriculture, and people’s livelihood and would continue to support Liberia’s economic and social growth to the best of its abilities.
According to Minister Nyanti, Liberia is open to learning from China’s experience in poverty reduction and development, encouraging trade, agriculture, infrastructure, health care, people-to-people interactions, and culture. In-depth discussions on certain development cooperation projects were also discussed by Minister Nyanti and Chairman Chen Xiaodong, highlighting the official Chinese organization in charge of overseas aid, CIDCA.
The foreign minister’s visit was highlighted in Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu’s speech when he had special media engagement with Liberian media.
