Monrovia, Liberia – In an effort to reduce the risk of infant death nationwide, the Ministry of Health announced Safe Motherhood Week on Monday. “Every Birth Counts: Strengthening Care for Mother and Newborn” is the theme for Safe Motherhood Week.
As an obstetrician-gynecologist who has seen the pleasures and sorrows of delivery, Minister Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto said in a statement on Monday, July 7, “I present myself not only as your Minister of Health, but as a lifelong advocate for mothers and newborns. Our theme serves as a reminder that every birth is valuable and every life counts.”
Safe Motherhood Week is more than just a promotion, she added. Safe Motherhood Week, according to Madam Kpoto, is a serious call to action and a reminder that no mother should die while giving birth and that no baby should be denied a healthy start.
Through the Ministry of Health, the Liberian government confirms its unshakable commitment to enhancing healthcare system, with a particular emphasis on lowering the morbidity and death rates among mothers and newborns. The Ministry of Health stated, “We are working tirelessly to strengthen care for mothers and newborns at all levels to ensure that every woman, every newborn, everywhere has access to timely, respectful, and high-quality care.”
We understand that a thriving nation is built on the health of mothers and babies, she continued. Dr. Kpoto noted that the Ministry of Health is increasing its efforts to improve emergency obstetric and neonatal care, increase the number of competent birth attendants, guarantee the supply of necessary medications and supplies, and remove obstacles that endanger lives.
Dr. Kpoto said, the Safe Motherhood Week and its theme, Every Birth Counts: Strengthening Care for Mother and Infant, should reaffirm everyone’s dedication to safeguarding women, protecting newborns, and building a future where no infant dies from preventable causes and no woman dies during childbirth.
