Monrovia, Liberia — In honor of World Sight Day 2025, the Ministry of Health (MOH) joined regional and global partners on Thursday, uniting under the global theme “Love Your Eyes” and the catchphrase “Every Story Counts.”

With the goal to prevent unnecessary vision loss throughout Liberia, this year’s observance brought attention to the significance of routine pediatric checkups and early eye screening.
The Ministry of Health’s Program Director for the National Eye Health Program, Dr. Molley R. Goe, Jr.,thanked all partners for supporting this year’s observance and restating the Ministry’s commitment to lowering avoidable blindness in Liberia.
Dr. Goe stated, “We would like to express our profound gratitude to the Ministry of Health and our partners on behalf of the National Eye Health Program for their invaluable assistance in making this year’s World Sight Day a success. We performed national, central, and southeastern outreach programs and radio discussion shows addressing uncorrected refractive problems as part of our awareness campaign.”
He added that the results of the most recent RARE Survey showed that cataracts and uncorrected refractive errors continue to be the two top causes of vision impairment in Liberia.
“We hope to lower the high prevalence of uncorrected refractive errors in the nation by offering these free screenings and corrective services,” Dr. Goe continued.
Free eye exams were held at the Government School in Gaye Town on Tuesday to kick off the week-long outreach. On Wednesday, Paynesville Central High School hosted similar events. The program provided free glasses and medication to community members, instructors, and students.
According to Dr. Goe, patients with cataracts have been directed to partner facilities for specialist treatment as a result of the partnership with New Eye Sight.
The activities concluded with a closing ceremony at the Ministry of Health, where staff members also received on-site screenings and information on preventive eye care.
Dr. Goe expressed gratitude to all of the support personnel who helped make the campaign a success, including the ophthalmologists, resident physicians, ophthalmic nurses, opticians, and others.
“We sincerely appreciate the effort and commitment of all those involved. To improve eye health care throughout Liberia, we’re eager to expand on this progress.”
