Monrovia, Liberia – The National Fishery and Aquaculture Authority of the Liberian Government has temporarily banned the manufacturing of dry rotten fish, also known as mue meu, throughout the country’s sea coast of Liberia.

According to the Director General of NaFAA Emma Glassco, the production of mue mue along the sea is destructive as such it has caused environmental pollution on the species’ existence.

Madam Glossco disclosed that this method is carried out by migrants who cast their net in the sea for about weeks causing the fish to travel far away from the Liberian coast because of the pollution. On June 26, 2023, she said these unethical actions have led to a shortage of bony fish, particularly in Sinoe and Maryland counties.

The NaFAA Boss revealed that fish dealers are now visiting nearby nations like Guinea and Ivory Coast to get dried fish so they can maintain their businesses.

Director Glasco stated that a task force was established following a stakeholder conference that included the commander of the Coast Guard, the Liberian National Police, and other security agencies. She also mentioned that in order to conserve the surviving aquatic species, security boats will be deployed throughout Liberia’s coast in early July.
