A two-day symposium on the national action plan for including persons living with disabilities across the nation has been launched jointly by the National Commission on Disability and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with other development partners.

According to Daitowon Domah Pay-Bayee, the National Chairperson on Disability, people with disabilities make up 20% of Liberia’s population or about 900,000 people. She noted that as a result, they must be considered in national decision-making for the growth and development of the nation.

The National Strategic Roadmap of the National Commission on Disability, she stated, includes the following thematic areas: inclusive governance, health and wellness, access to justice, and protection. She also mentioned that these areas are aligned with the NAP.

The variety of stakeholders we consulted demonstrates the significance we placed on the process. Officials from the National Commission on Disabilities have created a framework document titled “The National Strategic Disability Road Map” in collaboration with UNDP. The Roadmap will concentrate on policy implementation and make sure that the Commission plan is fully implemented throughout the nation.

The National Disability Chairperson revealed that the National Action Plan framework document will be officially launched next month in December and it will be implemented from 2023 to 2027; the symposium, which is expected to come to a conclusion this Wednesday, is one of the events geared toward the improvement of the sector.

She also praised the government of the Coalition for Democracy Change for the National Commission on Disabilities’ budgetary level of progress. The commission’s budget has increased from $300,000 to $629,000.00, according to Madam Pay-Bayee, who revealed this to a group of media on Tuesday in Monrovia.

She maintains that with the budgetary advances made by the commission over the years, the quality of life and the development of individuals with disabilities in the nation have improved. She discovered that this is the first time the organization’s budget has reached this level since it was founded in 2005.

Heads of institutions for people with disabilities, county representatives, staff from the Commission, and representatives from development partners were also present at the program.
