AHEAD OF 2023 LEGISLATIVE AND PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

Monrovia, Liberia – The National Elections Commission and all registered political parties have reaffirmed their dedication to carrying out the agreement for a minimum 30 percent gender quota for female listing in the 2023 elections in Liberia.

The signature of the MOU between political parties and the electoral body, according to NEC Chairperson David Etta Brown-Lansanah, marks a crucial turning point in the country’s progress toward an inclusive political environment.

According to David Etta Brown-Lansanah, the signing of the MOU is a highly comprehensive demonstration of the political parties’ steadfast commitment to including women in the new political system.

She expressed gratitude to the UN Women, the UNDP, Irish Aid, Swedish Aid, ECOWAS, and the European Union for their assistance in creating the MOU.

Mulbah Morlu, the chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change, spoke on behalf of political parties and told the audience that they would see to it that the MOU was followed throughout the current election. According to Morlu, all political parties would work to implement the MOU’s terms in order to provide women with the support and rights they need to reach the 30 percent listing.

For her part, Christina Solomon, who represented Stephen Rodriques the Resident Representative United Nations Development Program at the program, said that she has the feeling that history is made by the signing of the MOU by NEC and all political parties. According to her, the occasion will also be remembered as important day in modern Liberia political history as a milestone for women’s political participation.

In a separate speech, Laurent Delahousse, leader of the EU delegation to Liberia, urged political parties to fully follow their pledge to nominate 30 percent women among their candidates. He contended that Liberia has a responsibility to ensure that women have the opportunity to advance politically as a member of the comity of countries.

In her remarks, Josephine Nkrumah, the ECOWAS ambassador to Liberia, emphasized the importance of a peaceful election in the nation. She claimed that any unrest in one of the West African regional organization’s member states has an impact on all the others because when Liberia is sick, one of its citizens will sneeze.

The ceremony, held under the theme: “ Increasing Women’s Political Participation In Elections Through The Full Implementation of Section 4,5 B and C of the New Elections Law.”
