Monrovia, Liberia – Davidetta Brown Lassanah, the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, has made a recommendation to the government of Liberia through the Ministry of Education to incorporate civic and voter education (CVE) into the national curriculum.
The NEC boss said, the number of invalid votes in the 2023 Presidential and Legislative elections is alarming as such, there is a need to include ‘CVE’ in the national curriculum to educate students about the electoral process; and how to mark ballot papers during elections.
She noted when civic and voter education is though in schools it will minimize the number of invalid votes during elections in the country. On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, during the NEC daily press briefing in Monrovia, the board of commissioners at the National Elections Commission informed the public that the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections has so far received the total invalid votes of one hundred and twelve thousand, eight hundred and seventy -five (112, 875) invalid from across the country while tallying ongoing at varies magistrates.
At the same time, the NEC Chairperson informs Liberians and stakeholders that the board of Commissioners has instructed the secretariat of the Commission to plan a re-run of the presidential, Senatorial, and Representative elections at two polling places in precinct Beo Lentuo in electoral District #4 Nimba County on Friday, October 20, 2023.
NEC reported that following the close of the polls on October 10, 2023, at precinct Beo Lontuo, some individuals made away with some of the ballot boxes and later destroyed the contents.
