NEC Certificates President and vice President-Elect Boakai and Koung

Monrovia, Liberia – The Board of Commissioners at the National Elections Commission of Liberia has finally certified President and Vice President-Elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Jeremiah Kpan Koung as winners of the November 14, 2023, presidential runoff elections.

Speaking at the certification programme on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in Monrovia, the Chair of the NEC, Madam Davidetta Brown Lansanah, commended all parties involved in the electoral process for their dedication to a peaceful outcome. At the same time, the head of the NEC underlined the Commission’s commitment to holding free, fair, and transparent elections going forward and commended the work of Liberia’s government and development partners in supporting the country’s 2023 presidential and legislative elections.

Joseph Boakai, the president-elect, promised to collaborate with the populace to improve Liberia. According to Amb. Boakai, the celebration would be pointless if Liberians were not able to reap the rewards of democracy.

The newly elected president pledged to steer the nation towards growth through the Unity Party and its Alliance. Additionally, he said, “Liberia has had its share of challenges, and we have shown the world that we can be different in a sea of democratic uncertainties regionally and globally.”

“We can offer a model and set good examples. We can boast of peaceful elections and act responsibly to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition. What we celebrate today is the outcome of years of turmoil: a military coup, an aberration of democracy, betrayals, and now we can all acknowledge the reward of collective endurance. Over the next few weeks and during my inauguration, my Vice President and I will lay out the road map for progress and development. We will fully articulate the pathway to peace, development, and progress. We are grateful to our international and regional partners who supported and invested in an idea that has flourished.”

“We express our gratitude to our political opponents, especially President Weah, who gave in before the final vote was tallied. He has also pledged that his administration will oversee a smooth transition. As President-elect Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai said, We expect that the will of the people has prevailed.”
