NEC Chair To Steps Down After 12 Years

Monrovia, Liberia – Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Liberia, has announced her desire to resign after more than ten years of service to the organization, resulting in a significant leadership change for the country’s electoral authority.

On Thursday, March 12, 2026, Madam Browne Lansanah announced that she would formally step down from her role on March 15, 2026, ending her more than twelve years of service with the Commission, first as Commissioner and then as Chairperson.

The departing head of the NEC stated in a formal letter to Joseph N. Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia, that she made the choice after consulting with her family and wanting to take a break after years of hard public service. At the conclusion of a tour of the NEC’s continuing renovations at its headquarters on 9th Street, Sinkor in Monrovia, she made the announcement.

Representatives of the Liberian government, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, and other parties involved in Liberia’s electoral process were present.

In describing her years of service to the Commission as “an honour and privilege,” Madam Browne Lansanah emphasised that the NEC’s work is still essential to maintaining Liberia’s democracy and ensuring the integrity of the nation’s elections.

She oversaw important democratic procedures, such as national and municipal elections that put the nation’s democratic institutions to the test, and she was instrumental in bolstering Liberia’s electoral governance system during her term. She also promised to work with the President to provide a seamless transition in the event that a new Chairperson is chosen.

Madam Browne Lansanah thanked the NEC staff, other Commissioners, political parties, civil society organizations, domestic and foreign partners, and other electoral stakeholders for their cooperation and support during her tenure.

In a statement, Liberia’s National Elections Commission honoured her years of service and contributions to the nation’s efforts to promote fair and transparent elections. As Liberia continues to strengthen its democratic institutions and electoral procedures, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is now tasked with selecting a replacement to head the Commission.
