Nimba County Land Dispute Continues

As Citizens Threatens Actions in their Favour If…..

Monrovia, Liberia – The Ganta Support Group, a group of resentful landowners in Nimba County, has threatened to seize possession of their contested lands if the Boakai-Koung government does not uphold the ECOWAS Court’s decision.

In its decision, the Court found that Article 14 of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights had been violated in relation to the right to property. Since then, the Liberian government has disregarded the ECOWAS court’s decision in the case, and has failed to properly settle the land issue.

It also made clear that by neglecting to take corrective measures to stop the violation of rights protected by the commission, the Republic of Liberia had breached Article 1 of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Speaking on OK Morning Rush, a local radio program in Liberia, Daouda Keita, the lead attorney for the irate Nimba landowners, claimed that his clients might employ violent tactics to seize possession of their land.
