A high Power United States Congressional Delegation arrived in Liberia yesterday on a state visit to the country.
Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Saah Kemayah on behalf of President George Weah and the Government of Liberia received the delegation at the Robert international airport in Margibi county.
The nine members of the congressional delegation which include Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman on House Foreign Affairs Committee, Representative Joyce Beatty, Chair on Congressional Black Caucus, Representative Ami Bera, and Ilhan Omar held a bilateral meeting with President George Weah on Monday morning, February 21, 2022, at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia.
In his welcome statement Minister Kemayah informed the Delegation that the Government and people of Liberia are humbled and honored to receive such a unique Delegation to Liberia, especially at the time the Country is celebrating its year-long Bicentennial, commemorating two hundred years of Freedom and Pan African leadership.
He highlighted to the head of the US Congressional Delegation, Congressman Gregory Meeks the very special relationship that both Countries enjoyed over the years. In a brief response, the head of the US Congressional Delegation to Liberia, Congressman Gregory Meeks thanked the government and people of Liberia through Minister Kemayah for the welcome and warned reception accorded him and his delegation to Liberia.
Congressman Meeks also acknowledged the historical ties between the two countries and stressed that they are happy to join in the celebrations of Liberia’s bicentennial.
He disclosed that they are fifty African Americans who are currently in the US Congress and one of the three is Congresswoman Joyce Beatty , Co Chair on Congressional Black Caucus who is happy to be back home including IIhan Omar , who was Born in Somalia, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota at the US Congress.
At the same time, Monrovia City Mayor Jefferson Koijee was part of those government officials who received the United States nine members delegation Monday at the Executive Mission. They presented a key to them which describes a symbol of welcoming them to Liberia.
Koijee in his remarks said Liberia will remain humbled as a child country for better relationships and support from the U.S.
