Monrovia, Liberia – More than thirty African nations are anticipated to join in celebration of the National Identification day, observed across Liberia. Speaking with reporters Tuesday, September 10, 2024 in Congo Town, Andrew Peters, NIR Executive Director said the core of Global ID Day is to increase worldwide awareness about the value of unique identity and to bring to international attention, the misery of millions of people who lack legal identity.

Director Peters said, under the worldwide theme “Celebrating the Right to be Visible,” Monday, September 16, 2024 will be the celebration of ID Day at Monrovia City Hall. According to NIR Executive Director, Liberia will celebrate this year the second time the day is observed.

He revealed that the organization has asked President Joseph N. Bokai to honor the occasion and act as the key note speaker. The Superintendents of the fifteen counties have been invited and they will be commissioned and certificated as ID Ambassadors in their counties, Peters said.

Director Peters also mentioned that the main purpose of the function will be to assist in the national ID card activities by bringing the issue of the relevance of the ID card to the grass root level, where different local traditional ways of communication can help people better grasp the importance of the National ID Card.

The NIR Boss indicated that the lD Day celebration will begin with a parade from 9 Street, Sinkor at beginning 8:00 AM and end at the Monrovia City Hall where the indoor Program will be held. He urged everyone invited or participating to show up at the Petrol Trade Gas Station at 8:00 AM Arriving participants will be given T-shirts for the parade.

“We also want to use this time to remind the general public that enrollment and issuance of National ID cards to citizens and legal foreign residents continues.”

The NIR Boss maintained that the institution is also renewing expired |D cards; hence, should citizen ID card expire, one should engage any NIR enrollment facility located wherever to have it renewed. Director Peters reported that there are fifteen enrollment centers in Monrovia and surrounding areas.

The Pan African group, known as ID4Africa, whose activities and goals are based on UN-SDG l69, coordinates the legal identification issues in Africa, NIR Executive Director clarified. One of the more than thirty countries in Africa that have acknowledged and celebrate the day, Liberia is a full member of the ID4 Africa Forum.
