Abuja, Nigeria – President Joseph N. Boakai has congratulated Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone on his appointment as ECOWAS Authority of Head of States and Government’s next chairman. At the end of the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held in State House in Abuja, Nigeria, President Bio was named the organization’s new chair.

The Liberian Chief Executive expressed his delight while conveying heartfelt congratulations to his Counterpart in next door neighboring State, Sierra Leone. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who held the position for a period of two terms beginning in July 2023, relinquishes the gavel of power of ECOWAS to President Bio.

The heads of state and government of the member nations in the West African subregion make up the Authority, which is ECOWAS’s highest decision-making body, and now President Bio serves as its new chair. Most recently, three of the original 15 member nations of the Community, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger withdrew.

In addition to promoting economic policies, political governance, institutional reform, and the united African stance on UN Security Council reform, the Chair of the Authority is tasked with guiding collective policy making on regional integration, peace, and security.

In May 1975, ECOWAS was founded with the multifaceted goals of increasing economic integration, allowing its members to travel freely, strengthening democratic government, and fostering peace and stability.
