Monrovia, Liberia – At long last, Ex President Samuel K. Doe and his wife, Nancy Doe final joining has begun. The joining of the former first family commenced on Tuesday, June 24, with the opening of a Book of condolence at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Ashmun Street in Monrovia, which was led by top government officials.
At the signing of the book of condolence, there were also lawmakers, including former President George Manneh Weah, Senators, Legislators and family members. The remains of former President Doe and his wife were taken from the Samuel Stryker Funeral Parlor and taken to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, where they were lay in state.
The Armed Forces of Liberia marching band led the necessary military escort, while the Greater Evangelism World Crusade Liberia Mission Church and Monrovia Community Mass Choir sang throughout the quiet hours and while the state laid in state at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion.
Immediately following the laying in State, the remains were taken to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County, the birthplace and final resting place of the late president. Amb. Dr. Isaac Wehyee Nyenabo, speaking on behalf of the family, announced that the Albert T. White Sports Stadium in Zwedru will host a Night of Wake-Keeping on Thursday, June 26.

The late President and former First Lady’s last funeral rituals will take place in Zwedru City Hall on Friday, June 27, starting at 9:00 AM, he said. Following the burial service, the pair will be buried at Zwedru’s Doe Compound.
From 1980 until 1990, former President Samuel Kanyon Doe presided over Liberia as its twenty-first president. Ethnic conflicts, reform initiatives, and civil unrest ultimately led to his untimely death during his reign. Many regard President Doe and his wife’s reburial at Grand Gedeh as a sign of national closure and reconciliation after decades.
