Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s position on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been described by President Joseph N. Boakai as a “global responsibility and national opportunity.”

The President urged all Liberians to embrace the deep significance of Liberia’s election to the UN Security Council, calling it both a tremendous honor and an important duty, while addressing government officials during a special Cabinet meeting.

President Boakai announced, “Liberia is back on the global stage, and Liberia is ready!” as he opened a special cabinet meeting that was called to outline Liberia’s strategic direction for its term on the Council and to recognize the extraordinary efforts that went into the successful campaign for the Non-Permanent Seat.

He sent his sincere gratitude to the Cabinet members, the Dean of the Cabinet and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honorable Sara Beysolow Nyanti, and all those people and organizations that helped make this momentous accomplishment possible.

President Boakai reminded Liberians that our progress as a group must result in prosperity, visibility, and advantages for everyone. He emphasized that “we put forth our best to ensure an enduring legacy for our term to end with pride and honor,” adding that “our ARREST Agenda, the African Agenda, and the global agenda must be pursued.”

Madam Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the foreign minister, gave the cabinet meeting an update on Liberia’s duties and obligations as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Minister Nyanti gave an overview of the UNSC’s mission and evaluated Liberia’s readiness, discussing technical capacity needs such budgetary provision, financial assistance, and staffing as well as developing strategic and moral foreign policy stances.

The meeting was the first of several high-level meetings intended to make sure that Liberia’s commitment to peace, security, and international collaboration is reflected in the country’s leadership on the Security Council.
