Monrovia, Liberia – The ECOMOG Memorial Committee’s Terms of Reference have been extended by President Joseph N. Boakai to acknowledge the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) for its crucial contribution to the country’s return to peace and stability.
The ECOMOG Memorial Committee was first established by the President on January 29, 2025, with Major General (Rtd) Daniel Ziankahn serving as its chairman, according to a February 19, 2025, Executive Mansion statement.
The committee’s job was to recognize the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group’s (ECOMOG) services to the peace process in Liberia. As part of this expansion, the committee will also restore the Peace Monument on Du-port Road and resume its work to locate mass graves around the nation.
In 2003, UNMIL began its largest peacekeeping operation at the time in Liberia, following ECOMOG’s presence in 1990. Throughout its mandate, UNMIL has been instrumental in maintaining national stability, supervising the disarmament process, enabling democratic elections in 2005, and establishing the groundwork for changes in governance and nation-building.
Additionally, the UN created a framework for peacebuilding that still aids Liberia’s advancements both at home and abroad. Liberia commemorates more than 22 years of unbroken peace today. The Government of Liberia is dedicated to making sure that ECOMOG and UNMIL get the utmost respect and gratitude from a grateful country in acknowledgment of their efforts and contributions, the Executive Mansion statement noted.
