Monrovia, Liberia – During a courtesy call at the Executive Mansion, President Joseph N. Boakai met with Joshua Carter, grandson of the late former U.S. President Jimmy Earl Carter, and a distinguished delegation from The Carter Center.
The visit emphasized the Carter Center’s decades-long collaboration with Liberia, particularly in the fields of democracy, peacebuilding, health, and human rights, according to an Executive Mansion announcement dated April 8, 2025. President Boakai expressed his sincere gratitude to the Carter family and celebrated President Jimmy Carter’s legacy, which continues to benefit Liberia via his dedication to international humanitarian efforts.
The Center’s groundbreaking work in Liberia’s mental health area was highlighted throughout the discussion. President Boakai recognized the important role the Carter Center has played in helping the Liberian government improve mental health services, increase local capacity, and lessen stigma via community engagement and mental health clinician training programs.
The Liberian CEO emphasized the need of maintaining and growing mental health services throughout the country and promised his administration’s full support for programs that enhance everyone’s quality of life.
or his part, Mr. Joshua Carter reiterated the Carter Center’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Liberia. He underlined the Center’s ongoing dedication to promoting mental health programs and democratic growth in the nation while applauding the government’s achievements in healthcare and governance.
Carter Center has been operational in Liberia since the mid-1990s, playing a critical role in election observation, civic education, access to justice, and combating some classes of tropical diseases. Launched in 2010, the Mental Health Program continues to be a vital component of its assistance to Liberia’s public health system, having educated hundreds of mental health doctors.
