Monrovia, Liberia – Liberian President Joseph N. Boakai has officially re-launched the Domestic Scholarship Program for 424 successful applicants. President Boakai called the scholarship a major effort that aims to give Liberian students educational chances and improve their educational journey at the launch on Saturday, December 7, 2024 in Monrovia.
The Liberian leader also stressed the importance of inclusion, considering the difficulties parents faced during the civil crisis and their continued challenges in supporting their children’s education.
President Boakai also aim to increase access to high-quality education, offer financial aid to disadvantaged students who desire to continue their education but are unable to do so because of financial limitations, and support the government’s ARREST Agenda by empowering academics.
The President also underlined that the country’s youth are its future and that their empowerment is essential to Liberia’s advancement. “Recipients of this opportunity must contribute to society. The projects that the children have shown here today thrill me.”
President Boakai emphasized that the process is for Liberia and not about the UP or CDC, and that the meeting was not about party allegiance. The President added that as the scholarship’s main goal is to empower the nation’s young people, there should be no discrimination based on one’s origins or identity.
He revealed that prior to the program’s official launch, students were asked to present a thorough project plan that identified issues in their schools and communities. This allowed them to work on issues as a way to give back to society and present their ideas.
Interestingly, I am leaving this hall today with great excitement, carrying the mindset that young people may not know everything. However, what has been displayed here today by these young minds indicates that the future is bright, and Liberia will become the best country we all envision.”
However, he urged students to remain focused and study hard to maintain the required GPA as scholars. It can be recalled, during the vetting process, approximately 700 applications were received from various universities.
Following the procedure, 455 candidates were called to an information session at the EJS Ministerial Complex after being shortlisted; 424 of them successfully attended, making them eligible for the first bash.
