Monrovia, Liberia – After receiving criticism for his frequent use of private flights, Liberian President Joseph Nyumah Boakai returned to Liberia on Ethiopia AirWay 377, a commercial airline, after attending the 38th African Union Summit.
Prior to his return on Monday, February 17, 2025, President Joseph N. Boakai was criticized for using private aircraft a lot after leaving for Ethiopia to attend the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit. Concerns about accountability and transparency have been raised by the intense public discussion that followed the President’s costly travel decisions.
Critics have questioned the President’s decision to use private air travel, calling it extravagant in light of Liberia’s economic difficulties. The controversy surrounding the President’s travel expenses has escalated since his most recent trip to Ethiopia, where the summit is focused on addressing Africa’s urgent energy challenges.

President Joseph N. Boakai of Liberia promised to continue working with the African Union to address common issues and take advantage of opportunities during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU, held February 15–16, 2025. The session focused on modernization goals, self-reliance, and redressing historical injustices while reiterating the Global South’s demand for greater equality in global governance.
