Liberia President George Manneh Weah has by Proclamation declared Sunday, June 5, 2022, as “World Environment Day” and is to be celebrated on Monday, June 6, 2022, throughout Liberia as a Working Holiday.
The Proclamation further calls on the Environmental Protection Agency of Liberia as well as civil society organizations, partners and NGOs concerned to execute appropriate programs befitting the occasion.
The Proclamation is in consonance with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution, adopted in 1972, declaring the 5th day of June of each year as “World Environment Day” to be celebrated by all member states.
According to a Foreign Ministry release an indoor program commemorating the day will be held at the Peace Empire Hotel in Gompa City, Nimba County, commencing at Nine O’clock ante meridian. The Foreign Ministry release says the celebration of the day calls for transformative changes to policies and choices to enable clearer, greener, and sustainable living in harmony with nature, and the possibilities for shifting to a greener lifestyle through both policies and individual choices.
The release also stated that as a member of the World Environmental community, Liberia will join in the celebration of World Environment Day under the global theme: “Only One Earth” and national theme “Protect Earth, Save nature”.
The observance of World Environment Day provides the opportunity to focus worldwide attention on the importance of the environment and to empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development.
