Pres. Weah Sympathize with Gov’t and peoples of Turkey and Syria

Monrovia – Following the tragic loss of life caused by a powerful earthquake that devastated Turkey and Syria early on Monday, February 6, 2023, President George Manneh Weah has expressed his sincere condolences to their governments and people. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake, one of the worst to ever hit the area, is reported to have killed thousands of people in Turkey and the neighboring Syrian territory. Strong aftershocks that followed it severely damaged the infrastructure in the impacted areas.

President Weah stated that during this challenging time for Turkey and Syria, Liberia stands in solidarity with both countries and has volunteered to assist in any way that may be deemed essential.
Turkey has been a great ally and partner in Liberia’s development effort, and the country’s chief executive said it was terrible to see them dealing with such a natural calamity. The World Health Organization has voiced concern that once the rubble is lifted, the death toll, which is already at close to three thousand, could “increase eight folds.”
