Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, who defeated former Liberian President George Manneh Weah in the November 14, 2023, presidential election, believes that agriculture should be given priority. President Boakai declared in his inauguration speech on Monday, January 22, 2024, that as agriculture is the primary driver of growth in an agro-based economy such as Liberia, it must be the main driver of the country’s economy. He went on to say that putting more of an emphasis on agriculture will boost food security and create jobs.
President Boakai claimed that more than 50% of the nation’s population makes their living from agriculture, which also significantly boosts GDP. “It is our long-held view that, more than any other sector, agriculture is the most critical catalyst to drive growth in an agro-based economy like ours, create employment and ensure food security.”
Planning to improve agriculture would aid in food self-sufficiency, accelerate economic change, and lessen poverty, according to President Boakai, who has over 40 years of government experience and is poised to lead the nation to new heights via new innovations and teamwork.
“I believe our strategy for improving agriculture will help with food self-sufficiency, boost economic transformation, and reduce poverty.”
