TO BE OBSERVED ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 12, AS A NATIONAL HOLIDAY
Monrovia, Liberia, RELEASE – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who also serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Liberia, has declared Sunday, February 11, 2024, to be “Armed Forces Day” by proclamation. On Monday, February 12, 2024, the day will be observed as a national holiday across the Republic.
In addition, the Proclamation gives all military and paramilitary groups in the Republic instructions on how to plan and carry out suitable events, such as parades and other celebrations, to honor the Day.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, this year marks the 67th anniversary of Armed Forces Day and will be celebrated at the Barclay Training Center (BTC) under the theme “The Armed Forces Support to Democracy: The Role and Responsibility of the AFL.”
The Presidential Proclamation further informs that the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Liberia, Madam Christine Umutoni will serve as Guest Speaker.
According to the Proclamation, special attention and honor will be given to the veterans of the AFL and the Coast Guard who have seen active and experienced actual service therein and have upheld the tenets of democracy and human rights during services.
All government offices, public spaces, and business establishments are further instructed to close on that day by the release.
The Proclamation is in accordance with a National Legislature Act of the Republic of Liberia, which designates the eleventh day of February as Armed Forces Day, a national holiday, to be commemorated annually.
In addition to honoring the Republic of Liberia’s constitution’s guarantee of the country’s social and political liberty, the proclamation emphasizes that the Armed Forces of Liberia play a critical role in defending and protecting the country’s territorial integrity, people, and citizens from foreign aggression.
“With the passage of the National Defense Act of 2008, the Armed Forces of Liberia remain steadfast in supporting the foundation for long-term security and economic development in Liberia, as well as fostering regional peace through peacekeeping missions for the consolidation of enhancing and strengthening democracy throughout the region “, the presidential Proclamation declares.
