RELEASE
Monrovia, Liberia – Thursday, June 26, 2025, has been proclaimed “International Drugs Day” by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., and will be honored nationwide as a working holiday.
The Proclamation encourages all individuals, government ministries and agencies, and relevant foreign organizations to work with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to implement initiatives that are appropriate for the situation.
The international theme for this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and its illicit trafficking is “The Evidence is clear, invest in prevention,” according to an announcement from the Foreign Ministry. The slogan. Break the Circle. Prevent Organized Crime.
Millions of people throughout the world are still impacted, both directly and indirectly, by drug usage and its illegal trafficking, which have presented serious challenges to humanity.
The Proclamation is in line with a 1999 National Legislature Act that established the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and gave it the power to stop the illegal importation, trafficking, and use of harmful narcotics.
The purpose of the day’s commemoration is to raise awareness of the terrible toll that illegal drugs take on people and families and to encourage communities and other interested parties to oppose drug usage.
The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 42/112 on December 7, 1987, designating the 26th of June as the International Day Against Illicit Trafficking of Drugs and Other Substances of Abuse, to be observed globally.
