President Boakai Departs Liberia for African Union Assembly in Ethiopia

Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai departed Monrovia for Addis Ababa to attend the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for February 14–15, 2026. Ethiopian Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed will host a State Dinner for African leaders at the high-level meeting in the Nelson Mandela Hall of the Addis International Convention Center.

The dinner’s goal is to discuss key continental priorities, including the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), food security under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), Africa’s participation in the G20, Agenda 2063, peace and security, and institutional reforms of the African Union.

The Opening Ceremony will also feature speeches by the UN Secretary-General, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and other prominent international partners. At the AU Assembly, the African Union’s chairpersonship will be passed together with the unveiling of the Assembly’s 2026 subject.

“Ensuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063” will be the primary emphasis of the summit.

President Boakai’s participation will demonstrate Liberia’s commitment to international diplomacy, regional peace and security, democratic government, economic integration, and sustainable development across the African continent.

On issues of mutual importance, such as regional cooperation, peacebuilding, youth and women’s empowerment, and Liberia’s development priorities, the Liberian leader is expected to engage in bilateral talks with other heads of state and government as well as significant allies.
