Monrovia, Liberia – The President of Liberia George Manneh Weah, on Thursday, September 29, 2022, commissioned the newly appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Her Honor Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Youh.
She is the third female to occupy the highest office in Liberia’s judicial system replacing outgoing Chief Justice Francis S. Korkpor, Sr.
Performing the solemn ceremony at the Executive Mansion, the Liberian Leader said he had no doubts about the ability of the new Chief Justice to perform to prospects because she has got the requisite experience, skills, and qualifications to expeditiously handle the Judiciary Branch of Liberia.
President Weah expressed delight about the fact that Associate Justice Youh appointed by him, is the third female Chief Justice in the 175-year history of the founding of the Liberian Republic.
Mr. Weah also noted that the new Chief Justice has become the first female to ascend to this high office of leadership in the Second Branch of Government since 2003, some 19 years ago.
The first female chief justice of Liberia was Her Honor, Frances Johnson Morris who became chief justice of Liberia in 1997 followed by Her Honor Gloria Musu Scott.
Justice Youh appointment to the highest seat in the Judiciary brings the number up to 25 chief justices of Liberia since its founding.
The Soccer legend turned politician maintained that upon the nomination of Justice Youh she was carefully vetted and confirmed by the Liberian Senate something which he said brought her to the point of commissioning.
“Your Honor, upon my nomination, you have been successfully vetted and confirmed by the Honorable Liberian Senate, following upon which you are now being commissioned by me as evidence of the full confidence and support of the other two branches of our tripartite governance structure.” Mr. Weah noted.
President George Weah told the gathering at the commissioning ceremony that he has no doubt that Chief Justice Youh has the requisite knowledge, skills, and qualifications to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, considering the length of time she has practiced in Liberian Judicial system, as well as nine years as Associate Justice on the Supreme Court bench.
“It is essential to note that, throughout your memorable career in the practice of law and jurisprudence in Liberia,” Mr. Weah told Chief Justice Youh, “you have earned a well-deserved reputation of indisputable character and impeccable virtuous decision.” Weah lamented.
Chief Justice Youh has replaced former chief justice Francis S. Korkpor, Sr. who has retired in line with Article 72b of the 1986 constitution, having served in the capacity for more than a decade.
For her part, Chief Justice Youh promised to uphold the rule of law, and dispense justice without fear and favor.
