George Manneh Weah, the president of Liberia, has issued a proclamation asking the 54th Legislature to extend the fifth Regular Session for one week, from July 16 through July 22, 2022.

The Proclamation is in accordance with Article 32 (b) of the Liberian Constitution, which states that the President may, on his or her own initiative or upon receiving a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the members of each House, and by proclamation extend a regular session of the Legislature past the date of adjournment or call a special or extraordinary session of that body to discuss or act upon matters.

In accordance with the aforementioned Article 32(b) of the Constitution of this Republic, a Certificate of Extension was signed on July 12, 2022, by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each house, and by proclamation to extend the fifth Regular Session of the 54th Legislature from July 16, 2022, to July 22, 2022, in order to discuss or act on several time-sensitive bills as well as others that focus on integrity, transparency, and accountability.

According to Article 32(b) of the Liberian Constitution, a proclamation must be made no later than 48 hours following the President’s receipt of the Certificate when the Legislature requests an extension or call.

In accordance with the aforementioned Article 32(b) of the Constitution of this Republic, a Certificate for the extension of the Fifth Regular Session of the 54th Legislature for a period of one week beginning July 16, 2022, to July 22, 2022, has been laid before the President on July 12, 2022. This will allow the Legislature to discuss and take action on matters of national concern.
