PUL and Morocco Forge Partnership to Enhance Journalism and Media Capacity in Liberia

RELEASE

Monrovia, Liberia – The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco have held high-level discussions focused on strengthening cooperation to enhance and elevate the capacity-building efforts for journalists and media professionals in Liberia.

Top officials from both organizations attended the meeting, which took place on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Kingdom of Morocco’s Embassy in Sinkor, Monrovia.

It came after a string of positive interactions between the Moroccan Embassy and the PUL leadership, which were facilitated by the Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Lahoucine Rahmouni, and shown a dedication to bolstering media infrastructure and encouraging professional growth.

Mr. Rahmouni gave the PUL delegation an update on the various investment and bilateral projects the Moroccan government is presently working on in Liberia during the discussions. These cover a wide range of topics, such as commerce, energy, education, training, digital empowerment, and agriculture, and they represent Morocco’s larger vision of African solidarity and South-South cooperation.

In his speech, PUL President Julius Kanubah thanked Mr. Rahmouni for his continued constructive communication with the PUL, which was demonstrated by the Embassy’s active involvement in the Press Union of Liberia’s recent 61st anniversary celebrations and the ongoing interaction with the country’s media industry.

In addition, Mr. Kanubah made a plea for Morocco’s cooperation and assistance in filling the technical, institutional, and training deficiencies the Liberian media is now confronting, especially in the areas of professional growth, digital innovation, and media resilience.

Although he emphasized that Liberia’s media still plays a vital role in promoting democracy and accountability, he also pointed out that the media faces significant obstacles in keeping up with the global media transformation.

“The Kingdom of Morocco’s expertise in digital innovation and training offers a great chance for collaboration and mutual development,” the PUL President said.

Regarding Liberia’s national development targets under the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, Mr. Rahmouni reiterated Morocco’s dedication to promoting freedom of expression and media professionalism.

The discussions represented a positive first step in the formation of a strategic partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Press Union of Liberia, with the goal of promoting professional journalism and the growth of sustainable media in Liberia.

Attending the meeting alongside the PUL delegation were: Mr. Hossain Asrouti, Counselor of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco to Liberia, Ms. Estelle Liberty, Chairperson of the Anniversary and Resource Mobilization Committee of the PUL, Mr. Edwin Clarke, Technical Advisor of the Anniversary and Resource Mobilization Committee of the PUL.
