Raji Draws curtains down on CAF Coaching instructor course

Liberia Football Association (LFA) President Mustapha Raji wants Liberian coaches to teach and coach abroad.

Raji said coaches should be ambitious with the sky being their limits.

He was speaking at the end of a Confederation of African Football (CAF) coaching instructor course at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium on 16 August.

“I hope those who will be cleared by CAF to be instructors will be thinking about coaching and teaching abroad and not only in Liberia. I want to thank all of you, who have made this course successful, for all your sacrifices because we all want Liberian football to grow and develop.

“We said we wanted to develop football at all levels when we took over to create opportunities for all Liberians. When we go out and don’t see Liberians, we asked ourselves, why Liberians are not out like others. Steve is here today to impact knowledge. I want to see one of you tomorrow going out there too.

“The sky is the limit for every one of you. With the authority vested in me as LFA president by the stakeholders, I hereby declare formally closed this CAF coaching instructor course,” Raji said.

The course was held at the George Weah technical center in Careysburg from 9-15 August.

South Africa’s Steve Coetsee was the lead facilitator and was assisted by LFA technical director Henry Browne, LFA women’s football manager Francis Tamba and former Liberia head coach Kaetu Smith.

Browne, Tamba, and Smith are the only certified CAF Liberian coaching instructors.

Coetsee, who played football and began coaching in 1977, has been working with CAF as an instructor for 10 years.

“You are 10 instructors, who will hopefully be qualified by CAF. Liberia will have 1,000 coaches if each one of you teaches 10 persons per year. Liberia will have a good number if that continues for 10 years,” Coetsee predicted.

Browne thanked the participants and their willingness to acquire new knowledge.

“We put out the application two times. We got a total of 14 applications but two persons were disqualified and two persons didn’t show up. I want to thank all of you, who turned up for 10 days, to acquire new knowledge”.

Participants include Robert N. Lartey, Sr., Lucretius S. Togba, and Daei Arab Fofana (CAF License ‘A’); Famatta Dean, Euphemia J. Wilson, Ansu Keita, Emmanuel A. Baffoe, and Jasper I. Benfelix (CAF License ‘B’) and Alhaji Oumar Konneh and Barent K. Karr, Sr. (License ‘C’).

Papa Boima Kamara (CAF License A) and Francis Samujeabo Sarploh (CAF License ‘B’), who signed up for the course, didn’t appear for the training.
