    Rep. Miama Bridgs; We will Standardize Prostitution

    Monrovia, Liberia – Rep. Miama Bridgs Mensah, the leader of the women’s legislative curriculum and the chair of the House committee on gender, social protection, and welfare, has sworn to see to it that prostitution is standardized.

    Representative Bridgs-Mensah claims that if prostitution is standardized, it will stop men in Liberia from abusing young girls and women.

    “And I will say this, we want to see that prostitution is standardized. Men will not molise our children 12 years, 13 years and so.”

    Rep. Mensah furthered that if anyone decides to do prostitution who have attained the age 18years, they must go and obtain a certificate that will qualify them to do it, adding that the act of obtaining a certificate will shame men who want to do it.

    She maintained that there will be a prescribed law on the book that will punish and send to jail anyone who does prostitution illegally.

    The Bong County District 6 Representative was speaking on Friday, February 2, 2024 at the induction ceremony of the newly elected officers of the Board Members of the Women NGOs Secretariat in Liberia (WONGOSOL) held at the Shark’s Business Center on the Airfield.

    Rep. Mensah urged WONGOSOL new Board Directors to remain engage with their partners and work together as women in order to totally abolish child labor and FGM practices in Liberia.

    She charged the Women NGOs Secretariat Board Members to continually engaged in their advocates for women equal participation in politics and other leadership roles, noting that she trust the abilities of the new Board Members with lot of energy that have come to work and change the dynamic and put their partners feet on fire in an effort to attract support for women organizations in making sure that some of the ills in society if not stop but are minimized.

    The induction ceremony follows WONGOSOL recent biennial General Assembly (GA) held in Gbarnga, Bong County on December 19, 2024 under the “Promoting Women Leadership in Our Growing Democracy: A Call to Action”

    The Assembly, elected eight (8) Board Members including four Regional Coordinators to steer the affairs of the Board for the next two years.

    Those elected during the Gbarnga achor include: Atty. Facia B. Harris, Chairperson, Nelly Cooper, 1st VP, Victoria Torlo Koiquah, Esther S. Davis Yango, Secretary, Laura Bee Kiepo, Financial Secretary, Jannet O. Paye, Region one Coordinator, Kona Kollie, Region two Coordinator, Laura T. Korvah, Region three Coordinator, and Grace Scotland Brimah, Region four Coordinator.

    Also remarking at the induction ceremony, the Country Representative of UN Women Comfort Lamptey said the challenges facing women in Liberia are ever evolving.

    According to Madam Lamptey, it is the duty of the board of directors of the women NGOs Secretariat to guide through these challenges with unwavering determination.

    The UN Country Representative was speaking on Friday, February 2, 2024, during the induction ceremony of the newly elected officers of the women NGOs Secretariat.

    She, however, urged WONGOSOL Board of Directors to be resilient in the face of the many challenges.

    For her part, the new Board of Chairperson of WONGOSOL, Facia B. Harris vowed to continually advocate for women and girls across the country.

    Madam Harris further called on her fellow Board members to put the feet of WONGOSOL on fire in order to work in the interest of women and girls.

    She amongst other things noted that the challenges that women face on a daily basis are enmounou, noting that despite all of these challenges and circumstances they are always courageous to brake through the storms.
