Rufus Neufville; Increase pay for private-sector workers is essential

Monrovia – Amb. Rufus Neufville, the executive director of the People Action Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting democracy, is advocating for the extension of the federal minimum wage of $125 to the private sector. Neufville is reported as claiming that many workers in the PRIVATE SECTOR STILL EARN LESS THAN THE MINIMUM WAGE OF $150 USD in a release published in Monrovia.

According to the Executive Director of the People Action Network, after the government raises the pay of all civil servants to at least USD$150, it must also make sure that the private sector follows the same sensible guidelines. According to Neufville, numerous business owners have a consistent practice of paying their employees significantly less than USD$50 per month, which is utterly wrong. He added that companies also fire workers without following labor rules or best practices.

Serving as a legislator in 2009, Mr. Neufville is credited for pushing for an increase in the pay of civil servants. To ensure that Liberians are fairly compensated for their labor, he appealed to the committee on labor to exercise more monitoring power.

After President Weah announced in his State of the Nation Address that 15,000 federal servants would receive pay raises, the Executive Director launched his advocacy.
